The Anycubic Photon Mono X2 replaces the original Mono X. This model was released in 2020. We never reviewed the original model (though we were big fans of the Mono X 6K that followed it), so we thought we’d put the Mono X2 through its paces to see what improvements have been added to this updated model.
The resolution and build space of the prints have been slightly increased. Additionally, the company claims improved illumination which will result in better quality prints. It’s not all good news though, as WLAN functionality has been removed.
We will be reviewing the Anycubic Photon Mono X2 and comparing it to its predecessor. Let’s compare it to the Best 3D Printers On the market
Anycubic Photon Mono X2: Design & setup
- Easy to set up.
- Case and cover updated in angled design
- Front LCD panel
Photon Mono X2 was assembled almost entirely at the facility. Practical use and testing required very little additional setup. The protective foils should be removed after unpacking and the printing plates must be inserted. After the plate has been numbed with the provided paper, it is time to insert and fasten the resin tank. This process takes just a few minutes. Now you can fill in the resin and get started with the printing process.
The Mono X2 was very easy to set up. We took less than 20 minutes to complete the entire process. The manual clearly explains the process and should not pose any problems for novices.

The Photon Mono X2 has had a little bit of a makeover compared to its predecessor. Both the iconic, yellow-tinted cover and the main body’s shapes have undergone significant adaptation with a new angled look.
Outside of cosmetics, it’s all business as usual. The construction plate is held in position by four screws and the resin tank is held in its place with two screws. The display is now on the front while the USB, switch and power connections are on the right. All of this was the case with the Mono X. The device’s functionality has not been affected. Don’t fix what’s broken.

The Anycubic Photon Mono X2 includes a monochrome (4K+) 9.1 inch (4096x2560px), LCD screen. The problem with the previous Mono printers was that the spacing between the LEDs created a grid pattern which made the light less intense. The problem was due to the spacing of LEDs below the screen. However, we are happy to report that the issue has been resolved thanks to a modification in the distance between light source and lens. The Photon Mono X2 has no anti-aliasing issues as the previous version.
The build plate measures 7.8 x 7.7 inches x 5-inches. 200 x 296 x 122 mm. This is large enough to fit most hobbyist models. You can also use it for larger prints, if you are creative about positioning.
The Mono X2’s construction quality is excellent. The clear cover and the base casing sides of the 3D-printer’s mono X2 are made out of plastic. All other parts are made out metal. It has a premium feel and excellent craftsmanship.
Anycubic Photon Mono X2: Print quality & speed
The same settings were used to print all models that we tested. We experienced no adhesion problems. All prints were made with Anycubic Waterwash+ resin. The suggested parameters were used to adjust the slicer with 0.05mm layer height. Each layer was exposed for 2.5 seconds, instead of 2.2 seconds. All settings on both the Photon Workshop Slicers as well as the Chitubox Slicers remained at their default values.
The first model we tested was an Eastman Kratos Bust that was based upon the most recent videogame, God of War Ragnarok. This model has the bust and its base separately. This model shows incredible detail. It appears that it was taken directly from the game. The clear details on Kratos’ leather armour, intricate engraving and texture of Kratos’ skin are all clearly visible. Even little details look fantastic on the Photon X2’s crisper 4K LCD screen.
The second model shows Mimir, Kratos’ friend and brightest person alive (also taken from the latest God of War: Ragnarok videogame). You can download this model yourself on Fotis Mint’s Printables page (opens in new window).
Although it’s a rather straightforward print, the model contains a ton of detail. The intricate carvings on his ears and the rune scars that cover his entire head are sharp and distinctive. The lines that run around his eyes, cheeks and tree stump where he rests are all well-defined.
We then decided to print a different model from Fotis Mint – the spawn bust. The base and bust are again printed in two pieces. Just like the previous prints, the Spawn Bust was printed flawlessly without any problems.
The final product was precise in rendering the chain links and waistband of the model and the actual texture of the suit. The enhanced resolution and antialiasing made it possible to reproduce the flowing cape and skulls with ease.
The Witch King of Angmar was then printed, another figure taken from the Fotis mint. This model is smaller. His crown and the robe that he is wearing are very detailed, even though this model is quite small. You can see the fabric and frayed ends of his garment if you pay attention. The intricate groves found in his crown are another unique feature that you can see, as well as the detail on his face.
For our final test, we chose to print the incredible Zombie Captain America bust. Fotis Mint’s sculpture of the Zombie Captain America bust was used once again. It is very detailed. We were amazed at the detail in his zombie face. Even his teeth were accurate. The model’s missing nose was also stunning. Everything, even the scales of his outfit, are crystal clear and sharp.
